C Siders
C’Siders was started in September 2016 by Peter Meacham. He had received a cancer diagnosis and realised there were no general support groups in the Weymouth and Portland area – so he set about finding out if there was a demand for one. The first meeting saw about 20 people attend and it all went from there. Membership has grown and experiences have been shared.
We found a ‘home’ for our meetings at the Wyke Smugglers pub on Portland Road where we meet on the first and third Mondays of the month at 7:30pm. We use their back room and can chat over a drink.
Speakers at our meetings have covered a variety of topics relevant to cancer but also some general-interest subjects. We’ve helped at events, like the Macmillan Mighty Hike, and had some outings.
Some of us have attended cancer rehabilitation exercise sessions which has started us on a path to greater fitness.
We hold regular meetings where you can meet others with similar experiences and we can all learn from each other. Our members have experienced a variety of cancer types, but the feelings you have and some of the treatments are common to all.
Our meetings often feature a speaker who can give us useful information on a variety of topics, such as diet and nutrition, exercise, complementary therapies, etc. and we can help with sign-posting you to other useful services.
We also support C’Fit, a cancer rehabilitation exercise scheme run at the Osprey Leisure Centre. Some of our members take part while others volunteer to help at the sessions.
Another form of exercise we take part in is table tennis sessions for cancer patients and carers which take place at Wey Valley Tennis Centre; see our events list for dates.
